Yemen said Tuesday it regretted Germany's decision to ban all flights from Yemeni airports after the discovery of parcel bombs on US-bound planes, describing the move as "collective punishment".

"Yemen expresses its regret and surprise at the decision of Germany, with which it maintains good relations of friendship and cooperation, to ban all flights," a government spokesman said, quoted by the official Saba news agency.

Yemen's partners should help the country "reinforce its efforts to beat terrorism instead of resorting to decisions which can only be likened to collective punishment," the spokesman said.

Germany on Monday extended a ban on air freight from Yemen to passenger flights after parcel bombs posted in Yemen were found on US-bound cargo flights.
