Wismar, Germany (dpa) - Four students from the Czech Republic and Hungary were attacked with pepper spray and subjected to xenophobic insults in the German port city of Wismar, police said Sunday.

The four students, aged 21 and 22, were not seriously hurt in the incident, which occurred at around midnight on Friday.

The students said they had asked for directions from three cyclists, who then attacked them and fled.

Wismar falls in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, part of formerly communist East Germany, where there have been repeated attacks on foreigners.
