Hanover, Germany (dpa) - A 19-year-old woman being released from a youth detention centre smuggled a fellow-prisoner out in her suitcase, German police said Sunday.

Guards checking the 19-year-old out of the centre in Neustadt am Ruebenberge in the state of Lower Saxony on Friday noticed that her leather suitcase was heavy, but failed to check its contents.

The night control revealed that an 18-year-old prisoner, who had just 10 days remaining of a four-week sentence for theft, was missing.

Neither of the young women had been traced by Sunday.

The 19-year-old, who had served her two weeks for fraud, now faces a charge of freeing a prisoner.

The 18-year-old faces no additional charge, as escaping from prison is not a crime in Germany.
