BISCHOFSHEIM - A marital dispute ended in tragedy Sunday in central Germany when a woman accidentally drove the family car into a river and drowned, police reported.

Police said a man, 54, and his 38-year-old wife had had an argument. The man then left home to visit a tavern alongside the Main River.

The woman then drove to the tavern to bring him home. When he refused to get in the car, she started to drive away but apparently confused the forward and reverse gears and the car rolled into the river. The man tried in vain to rescue his wife, police said.

The incident happened at the Main River town of Bischofsheim, about 25 kilometres west of the city of Frankfurt.
