ZAGREB/SARAJEVO - A heavily armed Bosnian who snatched his four-year-old daughter in Germany and drove across central Europe to his Balkan homeland on Sunday told Bosnian television that his estranged wife had not been taking proper care of the girl.

Edin Kantarevic, 29, had surrendered to Bosnian Serb authorities in Novi Grad, ending a trans-European saga that began earlier that day in Viersen, Germany.

The man had taken four-year-old Melisa from his estranged wife Nevena in Germany and driven south through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia.

"I went to visit my daughter and found her crying," the dad said. "In another room I found my wife's lover. My daughter was watching her mother and her lover, and I could not stand that."

Police had at all times monitored his journey but said they did not intervene because Kantarevic was carrying hand grenades and at least one hand gun.

Bosnian Serb police spokesman Rade Mutic said Kantarevic released his daughter and another woman, who had been picked up in the Bosnian town of Otoka, before surrendering.

Kantarevic had handed over two grenades and a pistol to Croat police near the town of Kostajnica, shortly before entering Bosnia.

"Even than we did not try to stop him because he might have carried more weapons," Croatian Interior Ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

The little girl at the centre of the drama is now in the custody of her aunt. Kantarevic is to be detained overnight and handed over to the Novi Grad prosecutor on Monday.
