Oslo (dpa) - A water colour depicting a city scene of Vienna by German dictator Adolf Hitler was sold Tuesday at a Norwegian auction, news reports said.

Painted before World War I, the water colour fetched 180,000 kroner (29,300 dollars) at the auction in the west coast city of Bergen, the Bergens Tidende newspaper said.

No bids were made during the auction. The unnamed buyer had placed an advance bid.

Egill Wendelboe Aaro who conducted the auction said he had thought the painting would be sold for at least 200,000 kroner, the newspaper said.

In the early 1900s, the Austrian-born Hitler made numerous pictures but failed twice to be accepted to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.
