Vienna (dpa) - The Austrian capital Vienna is to get its own international book fair next autumn, the city announced on Tuesday.

The fair, named Book Vienna, will be in competition with the established Frankfurt book fair in neighbouring Germany.

Book Vienna was intended to attract visitors and experts from German-speaking countries as well as Central and Eastern Europe, the city of Vienna said.

Due to its central location, the new book fair was considered a novel literary meeting place in Eastern and Western Europe, sources said.

The fair is to be accompanied by a week-long series of readings during which authors are to read from their works at unusual locations in Vienna.

Austria, which is one of the main sponsors of the new festival, is set to announce further details at a press conference during the Frankfurt book fair on Wednesday.
