ROME - Pope Benedict XVI will attend the World Youth Day celebrations in the German city of Cologne in August, it was announced on Tuesday.

The three-day trip, from August 18 to 21, will be the first foreign visit for the German-born pontiff since he was elected in April.

The former Joseph Ratzinger, who on Sunday made his first trip outside Rome when he visited the Italian port of Bari, will also make a brief excursion to Bonn, officials said.

Full details of the 78-year-old pontiff's programme were not revealed, although insiders believe a high point of the Cologne trip will likely be an open-air mass to be attended by up to a million young people.
