BERLIN - Ukraine will return rare books and art treasures seized in Germany after the Nazi defeat in 1945, the German Foreign Ministry said.

Officials in Kiev agreed to return books from both the "Rosarium Library" in the city of Sangershausen and the "Zucker Museum Library" in Berlin as well as 286 other works of art including paintings and graphics, said the ministry.

Over the past decade the Ukraine has returned a number of works of art seized by the former Soviet Union as war booty after the Second World War.

In contrast, Russia has for the most part refused to return the vast number of paintings, historic archives and other treasures seized after the war.
