US war criminal arrested in Germany: police
German police said Wednesday they had arrested a 42-year-old Croatian-born US citizen previously sentenced to 20 years behind bars for war crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia.
The man, whom police did not identify, was picked up at Duesseldorf Airport on Tuesday on the basis of an international arrest warrant, authorities said in a statement.
Croatia's Supreme Court convicted the man for his role in the killing of 43 civilians on November 18, 1991 after the village of Skabrnja was taken by Serb paramilitary units and Yugoslav People's Army troops.
He was travelling from the United States to Serbia via Germany, police added.
Croatian media named him as former policeman Renato Petrov, sentenced in Croatia to 20 years imprisonment in absentia by a local court in 1995. The trial was held against him and 15 other suspects.
The sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court in 1998.
