RUDOLSTADT - Two men were killed and two persons were wounded in a shootout in the centre of the eastern German town of Rudolstadt on Tuesday, police said.

The police said the shootings took place on a street leading between the market square and the town castle in the town, some 180 kilometres southwest of the German capital Berlin.

Initial details as to who was involved in the shootout, and what caused it, remained sketchy as police sealed off a large area around the scene.

A witness reported seeing a car crash head-on into a wall, with one of the dead lying on the pavement at the site. A small child was rescued alive from the car.
