Two Moroccan asylum seekers were seriously injured in a fire at a detention centre in Mannheim prison, south west Germany, police said Thursday.

The fire began Wednesday evening in the detention centre where 40 asylum seekers were being held before extradition, a statement from police in the Baden-Wuerttemberg region said.

Staff from the detention centre pulled out the two men aged 31 and 33 who had been staying in the room where the fire broke out, and evacuated everyone else before police arrived on the scene.

Doctors said the two men's lives were in danger.

Another asylum seeker, and seven rescue staff were also slightly injured.

Police have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze.
