Toy gun sparks security alert at Merkel rally: police
A woman standing at a window with what turned out to be a toy gun while German Chancellor Angela Merkel was campaigning for a state election sparked a security alert, police said on Thursday.
Police noticed the woman at the window while Merkel was making a speech in Wuppertal in western Germany late Wednesday and rushed to the apartment where they recovered two toy guns and detained the woman and two men.
"At no point did a real danger exist for those present but careless spectator behaviour sparked a police operation," police in Wuppertal said in a statement.
The two men have since been released but the woman, who has not been named, remains in custody because she is wanted for another crime, police added. Several others were also in the flat at the time.
Merkel was campaigning ahead of a tight election on Sunday in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, that could lose her governing coalition its majority in the upper house.
