4 August 2004 , HAMBURG - Tennis player Tommy Haas is the best-known athlete on Germany's Olympic team for the Athens Games, beating former Tour de France champion Jan Ullrich and swim star Franziska van Almsick, the Capital magazine said. HAMBURG - Tennis player Tommy Haas is the best-known athlete on Germany's Olympic team for the Athens Games, beating former Tour de France champion Jan Ullrich and swim star Franziska van Almsick, the Capital magazine said.

Capital, in its latest issue made available ahead of Thursday's publication, said that a poll among 1,000 Germans saw 97 percent familiar with Haas, who won a silver at the 2000 Games.

Ullrich, a road race gold and time trial silver medallist at the Sydney Games, was known by 96 percent, followed by van Almsick and her handball-playing partner Stefan Kretzschmar (95 percent each).

Athletics star Grit Breuer, by contrast, is known only by 55 percent and former table-tennis world number 1 Timo Boll by 11 percent.

Germany will send 453 athletes to the Athens Olympics which start this month.
