JAKARTA - Police arrested a domestic helper and two of his friends in the murder of a German national living and working in Indonesia, local news reports said.

Police arrested Slamet Untung, 24, and two of his friends of the same age for conspiring to kill the German citizen, identified as Helmut Kleinen, 60, a cable company consultant.

"The motive behind the murder was money," city police spokesman Senior Commissioner Tjiptono was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Post. "They wanted to rob Kleinen to get money. When the German resisted, they killed him."

Police said Slamet let his two friends into the house in South Jakarta early Monday and led them to Kleinen and his valuables. Slamet was then reportedly beaten, bound and gagged to make it look like an outside robbery.

Another friend of Slamet found and untied the suspect later Monday morning before the two went upstairs to find the body and reported the incident to police.

Diplomats at the German embassy in Jakarta refused to discuss the case.
