Three people drowned in a cellar in southeast Germany Saturday after torrential rain hit the area, police said.

A 72-year-old woman, her 74-year-old husband and a neighbour, who was 63, died when they were caught by the floods apparently as they were inspecting the basement of their building in the town of Neukirchen, near Chemnitz in Saxony.

Rescuers found the three when they pumped water from the basement.
