REGENSBURG, GERMANY - Three persons were killed Wednesday when their Swedish-registered bus slammed into the back of a truck on a German autobahn near the city of Regensburg, police said.

The coach was carrying a group of southeastern European people back to Sweden where they live and work, German police said. All 31 survivors from the coach suffered injuries, some serious.

Police identified the dead as the driver, his assistant and a passenger, but their ages were not disclosed.

The coach hit the rear of the truck and was thrown leftwards from the carriageway against the centre barrier of the A3 highway, but did not overturn. Police said their initial assumption that the passengers on the bus were Swedish nationals had proved wrong.
