A small light aircraft from Poland crashed in woods near a housing estate in Bielefeld, western Germany, killing three people and seriously injuring another on Monday, police said.

"Three occupants of the plane died in the crash. A woman was rushed to Bielefeld hospital with life-threatening injuries," a police statement said.

"We do not know the reason for the crash," which happened at 10:32 am (0832 GMT), police said, adding that an investigation was underway.
