BANGKOK - Thailand has hired former German national football star Siegfried Held to coach the national team during its efforts to qualify for the next World Cup, officials said Monday.

The 62-year-old Held, who played for Germany in the 1966 and 1970 World Cup championships, is the latest of three coaches hired to shape up Thailand's national football team.

Held previously coached the national team of Malta.

Former coach Chatchai Paholphaet resigned last week after Thailand lost against Korea in a World Cup qualifying match.

Before Chatchai, the Thai national team was coached by Brazilian Carlos Raboto de Caballo and before him British national Peter Withe.

It is hoped that Held will help Thailand deflect the United Arab Emirates in a World Cup qualifying match scheduled in Bangkok on 13 October.
