Frankfurt (dpa) - An attempt to shoo away a wild sow from a playground in Frankfurt with tear gas backfired when the enraged animal charged its tormentors, forcing a woman and her children to scramble up a climbing frame, police said Tuesday.

They said there had been repeated sightings of wild pigs near the playground on the outskirts of the southwestern German city over recent weeks.

When the sow and her piglet turned up on Monday, attempts were made to chase them away with teargas.

The sow then turned on a woman with two children, forcing them to seek safety up a children's climbing frame.

A police officer who hunts in his spare time shot the sow, while his dog killed the piglet.

In the absence of their natural predator, the wolf, the wild pig has become common in much of Germany, where it is seen as a pest by farmers. Hunting them is a popular pastime.
