Police said Sunday they had launched a search for a German family of four who has been missing from camping grounds in southeastern Sweden since going on a canoe trip last week.

The family, two adults and two children aged between three and five, left the camp site early last week for a canoe trip on lake Immeln and were set to have checked out of the grounds on Wednesday, police said.

"We are not suspecting a crime nor an accident," said Helena Ralmark, a spokeswoman for police in the southern Skaane region.

"We have a patrol searching the area around the lake at the moment. A helicopter will hopefully lift off to fly over the lake soon," once the weather gets better, she told AFP.

She added that Swedish police had been in contact with police in Stralsund, northern Germany, where the family is from.

Swedish police also hoped to interview the missing's relatives in Germany later Sunday to find out if the family had been in touch "or if they maybe decided to camp somewhere else around the lake," Ralmark added.
