Namibian police said Thursday that a suspect package intercepted before it was loaded onto a Munich-bound plane contained wires and a timer.

"We found in the bag some devices, wires and a running clock," police Inspector General Sebastian Ndeitunga told NBC state television.

"We are investigating, we want to find out what was that for," said Ndeitunga.

Police earlier said the package was a laptop bag wrapped in plastic.

The package was seized Wednesday at Windhoek's international airport among luggage to be loaded onto an Air Berlin flight.

"Our officers found the parcel suspicious as it did not have a travel tag and it was thus removed from the luggage," said Ndeitunga.

The incident has prompted security levels to be raised in the small southern African country, with a strong police presence at the airport Thursday.
