Berlin (dpa) - Support for Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) fell this week, largely because of concerns over the party's plans to combat terrorism, a poll showed Tuesday.

Backing for the CDU and its Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) fell 3 per cent to 35 per cent, according to the survey by Emnid for the N24 television channel.

The poll followed proposals by Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung to shoot down hijacked planes and warnings by Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble of a possible nuclear attack by terrorists.

Merkel's Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partner remained unchanged at 28 per cent as did the opposition Greens on 10 per cent.

The opposition Free Democrats were up 1 per cent at 11 per cent and the Left gained 1 per cent to stand at 12 per cent, the poll of 1,000 showed.
