Six hurt in ferry sauna blaze off Germany
A blaze in a sauna on a ferry off the German coast left six people needing treatment while firefighters flew in by helicopter to tackle the flames, rescue officials said Thursday.
Three emergency boats and a transport helicopter rushed to extinguish the blaze on the British-owned North Sea transport ferry which broke out late Wednesday. The stricken vessel went on to reach Cuxhaven on its own.
The six suffered injuries from smoke inhalation after the fire in the sauna on the Hafnia Seaways ferry, bound from Immingham in eastern England for Cuxhaven in northern Germany, the rescue officials said.
Twenty crew members from Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and seven Polish and British passengers were on board the ferry, which transports vehicles and trains.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
