MAGDEBURG, Germany (AP) _ The sexton of a German cathedral has been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, and a search of the church turned up heroin in a safe, police said.

The 47-year-old man, who was not identified by name, is accused of dealing in heroin, cocaine and marijuana, and of using the St. Stephanus cathedral in Halberstadt, eastern Germany, to store the drugs, police said.

The man was arrested Wednesday in nearby Magdeburg, allegedly in possession of 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of marijuana with a street value of 21,000 euros (US$28,400) that he bought from a Dutch truck driver, police said in a statement. The driver was also detained, and released on bail, police said.

During a search of the cathedral, police said, they found 27 grams (an ounce) of heroin hidden in a wall safe in a room that contains heating equipment.

The Lutheran Church of Saxony immediately suspended the man, who had worked for the Halberstadt parish for 18 years.
