KARLSRUHE - Germany's federal prosecutor's office confirmed Friday that authorities had searched the apartment of a Moroccan man in the central city of Darmstadt in connection with the terrorist bomb attacks in Madrid.

The office said the search was carried out on Thursday, after the Moroccan suspect's arrest in Spain the day before. The man had been living for several years in Darmstadt.

If the suspicions against the Moroccan were to be found true, then it would be the second link to Germany of radical Islamic terrorism, after the core conspirators in the September 11, 2001 suicide plane attacks had lived in the northern German city of Hamburg.

According to the Munich daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, citing German security sources, the Moroccan suspect had spent the winter semester of 2003 at Darmstadt University studying electrical engineering.

Further details about the suspect, or what role he may have played in the deadly bomb attacks on Madrid commuter trains, were not immediately available.
