HANOVER - Michael Schumacher's dominance in the latest Formula One season cost the German broadcaster a lower overall audience for the third straight year.

But the RTL network said Monday it was nonetheless satisfied with their 2004 season.

RTL said that they had an average 8.51 million viewers for the 18 races, a market share of 46.8 percent. The best ratings came at the Bahrain GP in April with 11.55 million viewers.

The 2003 figures were 8.97 million viewers and 48.7 percent.

RTL information director Hans Mahr said that the figures were above those from 2003 early in the season, but that they dropped later as Schumacher completely dominated the sport en route to his seventh world title, winning 12 of the first 13 races.

"In the first half of the season we topped the 2003 result, but the ratings dropped after Schumacher clinched the title early.

"But we are very satisfied because there is no other sport apart from football which has such a popularity over a long period," said Mahr.
