MUNICH - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and his wife Doris Schroeder-Koepf have adopted a 3-year-old girl from Russia, newspapers reported Tuesday.

The girl, Viktoria, had lived in a Russian orphange until a few weeks ago but is now living in her new parents' home in Hanover in northern Germany, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung said.

The Bild newspaper reported that Schroeder and Schroeder-Koepf travelled to St. Petersburg to pick up their new daughter and the chancellor's bodyguards learned only at the last moment about the trip.

Viktoria is the couple's second child. They also have a 13-year-old daughter named Klara, who is Schroeder-Koepf's daughter from a previous relationship.

The German government refused to comment on the reports. "As a matter of principle, we will not comment on private concerns of the chancellor," the government's public affairs office in Berlin said.
