CEANU MARE - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder visited his father's grave in Transylvania for the first time on Thursday, paying tribute to the German soldier killed in action against the Soviet army in 1944.

Schroeder, 60, asked to be left alone during his visit to the grave that was only identified three years ago as the resting place of Fritz Schroeder, 32 years old when he died. The visit took place at the onset of an official visit to Romania.

The German chancellor had planned to visit the site in 2001, but the September 11 attacks forced what became an extended postponment.

Schroeder was accompanied in Ceanu Mare by Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase. The two leaders were scheduled to travel on to Bucharest for talks before Schroeder travels on to Bulgaria on Friday.
