BERLIN - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will have talks in Poland next week focused on the European Union and other international issues, a government spokesman said Friday.

Schroeder will visit Warsaw on 26 May for meetings with Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski and acting Prime Minister Marek Belka, said the spokesman.

The upcoming European Union summit in Brussels next month is expected to top the agenda.

Germany and Poland were at loggerheads over a proposed EU at an EU summit last December and the 25-nation bloc failed to approve a draft treaty.

Schroeder's deputy spokesman, Thomas Steg, said Berlin remained optimistic a deal would be clinched at the 17 to 18 June EU summit.

While in Warsaw the Chancellor will also make a keynote speech at the Polish Institute for Market Economy.
