BERLIN - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will have talks next week with incoming European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, a government spokesman said Friday.

"The Chancellor wants to know how the designated Commissioner plans to do his job," said Thomas Steg, a deputy spokesman for Chancellor Schroeder. The meeting is scheduled for 20 October in Berlin.

Steg did not mention an ongoing row between the European Parliament and Barroso. Socialist members of the parliament voted against Rocco Buttiglione, the designated Italian European Commissioner for justice and home affairs, because of his views on homosexuals and the role of women.

The socialist group warned that unless Barroso moved Buttiglione to a less sensitive job, they may try to vote down the entire 25-member Commission.

Barroso and the new Commission will formally take office on 1 November.
