BERLIN - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Monday he expected ties with India to become closer under newly elected Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

In a letter congratulating Singh, the German leader said: "I am confident the close ties between our two nations will become deeper during your term in office and look forward to meeting you soon."

There are hopes in Germany that bilateral trade will be boosted if Singh begins a new revamp of the economy similar to moves in the early 1990s when he was the architect of India's sweeping economic reforms.

Last year German imports from India were worth EUR 2.6 billion, while exports to India were valued at EUR 2.4 billion, according to official German statistics.
