BRUSSELS - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Tuesday said he was sceptical on Nato involvement in Iraq but said he would not block a decision on the issue at the alliance's summit in Istanbul in June.

"I have doubts if Nato is the correct instrument for the stabilization of Iraq," Schroeder told reporters after talks with Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt.

It would be more appropriate to ask Islamic countries to send troops to the country, Schroder noted.

Germany would stick to its decision not to send troops to Iraq, Schroeder said.
