BERLIN - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Friday congratulated British Prime Minister Tony Blair on his election to a third term in office, also sending the British premier birthday wishes.

"I think you have given yourself the best birthday gift possible with this election victory," wrote Schroeder in a congratulatory message.

Blair, who turned 52 on Friday, saw his Labour party win an overall majority of the 646 seats in parliament in Thursday's general election.

Britain is due to hold both the European Union Council and G8 Industrial Nations presidencies this year and will bear "great responsibility", Schroeder wrote, adding that Blair could "count on" his support.
