Berlin (dpa) - The visit to Berlin next week by new French President Nicolas Sarkozy will help to further consolidate the already close ties between Germany and France, a German government spokesman said Friday.

Sarkozy's visit to Berlin on Wednesday May 16 shortly after taking over as French president was an "impressive and extraordinarily strong indication of French-German friendship," said the spokesman in Berlin.

The spokesman said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose government currently holds the European Union presidency, looked forward to working with the new French leader and to further extending the ties between Berlin and Paris.
