European Union leaders will meet in Brussels next week for a summit after elections to the European parliament handed victory to right-wing parties, including Sarkozy's UMP and Merkel's Christian Union.

Paris -- President Nicolas Sarkozy will sit down with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Paris on Thursday to discuss the economic crisis and other issues at the upcoming EU summit, the French presidency said.

European Union leaders will meet in Brussels on June 18-19 for a summit held after elections to the European parliament handed victory to right-wing parties, including Sarkozy's UMP and Merkel's Christian Union.

"The head of state and the chancellor will discuss all of the main issues of the next European Council, in particular the economic and financial situation, the follow-up to the European elections and the legal guarantees that are to be given to Ireland on the Lisbon Treaty in line with the December accord," said a statement from the Elysee released Wednesday.

Ireland is set to hold a second referendum in October on the reform treaty and a victory of the 'yes' vote would pull the 27-nation EU out of its current institutional crisis.

Sarkozy and Merkel are to hold a news conference followed by a working lunch.
