A Ryanair plane coming in to land sent several roof tiles crashing into an elderly woman’s garden.

Berlin -- An 82-year-old German woman living near Hamburg-Luebeck airport got a shock this week when a Ryanair plane coming in to land sent several roof tiles crashing into her garden, police said Friday.

"The aircraft flew over and the elderly lady, the owner of the house, was in the garden at the time clearing up branches when the tiles came down," police spokeswoman Sonja Kurz told AFP.

The local newspaper, the Luebecker Nachrichten, cited witnesses as saying that the Boeing plane flew much lower over Gross Groenau than normal as it approached the airport, which is 65 kilometres (40 miles) from Hamburg.

"I almost pulled my head in. Normally the aircraft aren't so low and so loud," the paper cited one unnamed woman as saying.

She was walking her dog near Ilse Matschkus's house at the time.

An airport spokeswoman said the jet was flying at the correct height, however. A Ryanair spokesman referred enquiries to the airport.

The police estimated the damage from Thursday's incident at around 3,000 euros (4,500 dollars).
