WASHINGTON - US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Thursday he's not sure if he'll attend a security conference in Munich, partly over concerns about an inquiry into alleged war crimes.

Rumsfeld said he'll be in the region for meetings in Nice around the time the conference gets underway 11-13 February and is almost always attended by the American defence secretary.

But there has been a criminal complaint filed in Germany against Rumsfeld in connection to the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib, a probe Rumsfeld said he must consider before travelling to Germany.

"It's something that we have to take into consideration," Rumsfeld said.

"Whether I end up there I don't know," he said.

Under American diplomatic pressure, Belgium last year watered down a similar law that had been used to file complaints against top US leaders.
