BERLIN - A romantic night of love set a bed on fire and sent two Berlin teenagers to hospital for treatment of minor burns and smoke inhalation.

A 16-year-old girl took advantage of her mother's being out of town to invite her 18-year-old boyfriend to the family apartment in the Altglienicke district of Berlin.

To enhance the atmosphere, the girl turned out the bedroom lights and placed lighted candles around her bed.

As the evening progressed the bed linens caught fire and the lovers' attempts to stamp out the flames only fanned the flames.

Scurrying to carry a burning, down-filled duvet to the balcony off the living room, the naked teens managed not only to burn themselves but also to drop bits of burning feathers and fabric onto hallway and living-room furnishings along the way, igniting more small fires.

Firefighters quickly extinguished all the blazes.

The mother arrived to find her bandaged daughter in hospital and the apartment damaged by fire, smoke and water.
