HAMBURG - US film star Robert Redford, looking back on his life, told a German women's magazine that he realises he could have been a better husband and father.

In an interview in the "Frau Im Spiegel" magazine, the 67-year-old Redford said he does not look back with any nostalgia on his life.

"I have a good feeling concerning my work, but less of a good feeling about my private life," Redford said.

Redford, known as a person who guards his private life and rarely gives interviews, said he didn't think it makes much sense to dwell on the past.

"I always think that I could have been a better father and husband," said the actor who was married his wife Lola in 1958 and had four children. The couple were divorced in 1985.

The actor is currently living with German painter Sybille Szaggars, nicknamed "Billy", but told the magazine they have no aim to marry.

"Billy is my love, my girlfriend, my partner. We both think that we don't need a contract for this," Redford said.
