Berlin (dpa) - Armed robbers shot dead a 53-year-old guard Monday while holding up an armoured delivery run in the German capital Berlin and escaped with stolen cash.

The guard was walking with a container of cash from an armoured truck into a post office bank branch on Berlin's west side when he was gunned down. Though fatally wounded, he traded fire with the attackers.

Prosecutor Michael Grunwald said one of the three robbers might have been hit by a bullet in the shootout. He did not specify how much money was stolen in the attack.

The driver of the armoured truck used it to pursue the robbers and shunted their car, but could not stop them.
