BOCHUM, GERMANY - To track a thief, all German police had to do was take a page from their nation's fairy tales and follow the trail.

A discount retail store in central Bochum, a city in the Ruhr area of northwestern Germany, was broken into Sunday night. The perpetrator entered by breaking the glass door of the store, but in the process, he ripped his down coat.

Police said the man then walked home with his booty, a karaoke machine, as his jacket lost its stuffing.

Officers said they then only had to follow the trail of feathers, which led to the home in the neighbourhood - a la Hansel and Gretel - and to the suspect.
