German television group ProSiebenSAT1 said Thursday it may have to abandon transmission of national league football because it refused to pay the "mad" prices for the broadcasting rights.

In a pre-release of an interview to be published in the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Friday, ProSiebenSAT1 chief executive Thomas Ebeling said what a public TV channel such as ARD "is prepared to pay for the broadcasting rights for premier league matches is madness," Ebeling said.

Germany's second public broadcaster ZDF has already beaten ProSiebenSAT1 for the rights for Champions' League matches.

His comments come among much debate in Germany over the role of public-sector broadcasting and its financing as public TV and radio channels demand ever more money via an increase in television licence fees.
