MONACO - Doctors in Monte Carlo on Monday said that the condition of seriously ill Prince Ernst August of Hanover, husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco, had "improved" but he remained in intensive care.

The 51-year-old son-in-law of the late Prince Rainier was admitted to the Princess Grace hospital on 4 April for "an acute illness of the pancreas".

Ernst August and Caroline married 23 January 1999 and have one child, Alexandra. Ernst August is the eldest living descendant of the kings of Hanover, owns castles and estates in Germany and has made nature documentaries.

His illness is the second recent blow to Monaco's Grimaldi dynasty, which lost scion Prince Rainer on 6 April after an extended illness. Rainier is to be buried on Friday.
