REGENSBURG, GERMANY - Father Georg Ratzinger, the 81-year- old brother of Pope Benedict XVI, was discharged from a hospital in southern Germany Friday after observation of a cardiac condition.

The pontiff's elder brother, himself a Catholic priest, was hospitalized Wednesday with an erratic heartbeat at the Brothers of Mercy Hospital in Regensburg in Bavaria.

Just last month during a visit to his brother, Georg Ratzinger was rushed to a hospital in Rome where he was fitted with a new pacemaker at the Gemelli Clinic. Father Georg is the pontiff's only close living relative. Their sister Maria died childless.

As director of music, Georg Ratzinger headed the boys' choir at Regensburg Cathedral for three decades till retiring in 1994.
