REGENSBURG, GERMANY - Father Georg Ratzinger, the 82-year- old brother of Pope Benedict XVI, was admitted to hospital on Friday, suffering from an irregular heartbeat.

Doctors treating him at Brothers of Mercy Hospital in the Bavarian city of Regensburg said his condition was not life-threatening and that he could be discharged over the weekend.

The pontiff's elder brother, himself a Catholic priest, underwent treatment at the same hospital last September for a similar complaint.

A month earlier, he was fitted with a new pacemaker at the Gemelli clinic in Rome after taking ill while visiting his brother at the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo.

Father Georg is the pontiff's only close living relative. Their sister Maria died childless.

As director of music, Georg Ratzinger headed the boys' choir at Regensburg Cathedral for three decades till retiring in 1994.
