Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday said the Church remained a place for hope in spite of "bad seeds" within it, in a reference to the paedophilia scandals that have rocked the Catholic Church.

"Bad seeds exist right within the Church and among those that the Lord has specifically called to serve him," Benedict said in a message to the Kirchentag, a large Christian gathering held in Munich, Germany.

But, he said, there was also much good seed "that was not choked by the sowing of evil.

Over recent months the church had faced much dispiriting news but it was still "a place for hope coming from God," he said.

The Catholic Church has been engulfed by a series of unfolding sex abuse scandals amid allegations that the Vatican protected paedophile priests from prosecution in several European countries and the United States.

According to the news agency IMedia, organisers of the Kirchentag have added to the forum's programme two events discussing sexual abuse within religious institutions.
