ROME - Pope Benedict XVI in his first official interview said that the upcoming World Youth Day in the German city of Cologne was a chance for a revival of the Church in Europe, Italy's La Repubblica reported on Sunday.

Quoting an interview with the pope broadcast Sunday afternoon on the German edition of Vatican Radio, La Repubblica said the pope said he hoped that the event "would give new impulses for the old continent".

Christians should live with pride and dignity, the Pope said, adding that this should be seen not as an encumbrance but as a gift.

"There is a widely-held idea that Christians have to obey an immense number of commandments and proscriptions and that one is freer without these burdens," the Pope said.

Benedict said he personally wanted to make clear "that it is not a burden to be supported by a great love and that it is wonderful to be a Christian".

Up to 800,000 visitors are expected at the World Youth Day in Cologne in the coming week, which will see the first foreign trip of Benedict as pope.
