LES COMBES, ITALY - Pope Benedict XVI is spending his summer holidays in the Italian Alps playing the piano, taking long walks and working on a new book on Jesus, media reports said Tuesday.

According to Zenit, a Catholic news agency, Joseph Ratzinger is enjoying his favourite pastime at least twice a day, with classical pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Sebastian Bach heard coming out of his mountain-side chalet.

Zenit quoted Vatican officials as saying the German-born pontiff, an accomplished theologian, was also working on a new book.

Marco Politi of daily La Repubblica says the book will centre on the importance of Jesus Christ and on the Church's relationship with other religions. Benedict reportedly first started working on the book when he was still a cardinal, before his election as pope, in April 2005.

Benedict devoted much of last year's holiday in Les Combes working on his first encyclical, Deus Caritas, which was published in January.

Politi said the pope also planned to meet the Vatican's new Secretary of State, Tarcisio Bertone, while in Les Combes to discuss a range of issues, including the Vatican's strained relations with China and new appointments within the Curia, the Church's governing body.

Benedict plans to stay in the Alps until July 28. He will then spend the rest of the summer in his residence in Castel Gandolfo, in the hills south of Rome.
