2 August 2006, BERLIN - Support for Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats slumped to a new low for the year, according to an opinion poll published Wednesday. The Forsa poll conducted for the weekly magazine Stern showed 31 per cent of those questioned satisfied with the party's performance, a drop of 2 per cent from a week ago. BERLIN - Support for Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats slumped to a new low for the year, according to an opinion poll published Wednesday.

The Forsa poll conducted for the weekly magazine Stern showed 31 per cent of those questioned satisfied with the party's performance, a drop of 2 per cent from a week ago.

The Social Democrats, who partner Merkel's party in a government of national unity, were unchanged at 29 per cent.

The opposition Free Democrats and Left party were also unchanged at 14 and 10 per cent respectively, while the Greens edged up 1 per cent to 10 per cent.

The poll was conducted among 2,505 people between July 24-28.
